I am a Canadian-educated specialist in teaching English as a second/foreign language, teacher-training and bilingualism. Over the last 15 years I have taught English in various post-secondary schools as well as in-company and privately. After moving to the Netherlands in 2003, I began moving into work in the area of parent and teacher education for bilingualism. As expats, we are all raising our children to be bilingual in at least a small way, and it is important to understand the advantages of bilingualism and the best practice for raising bilingual children. With this mandate in mind, I give regular lectures on raising bilingual children (through Passionate Parenting in The Hague) in various locations around the Netherlands. In addition, I work closely with teachers and schools, ensuring that the teachers have the best knowledge and training to integrate non-native speakers into their classrooms and school community.

Have enjoyed reading some of your posts, wondered i could ask your advice, or a point in the right direction.
We’re Irish parents, living in London, about to start our boys with a Brazilian childminder, who speaks Portuguese at home. We’d love to encourage some bi-lingualism in them, but woondered about the pros/cons of such little contact (2 days per week).
Sorry if you don’t encourage such queries…just trying to see what’s out there.

My favourite, favourite topic that even forced me to write a bilingual book and create an app! I am raising two bilingual children (aged four and two) in English and Italian. Excellent advice and thankfully I have been doing some of these things for my girls (4 and 7 years old) who are growing up in Brussels. The older one now reads to us all – out loud. I have heard that reading out loud is also the best way to help our children with writing too in either language. PS – I notice you are teaching in Hiroshima – I did one year TEFL there in 1990.
